Shahrokh's general form draws inspiration from the traditional ground chair called "mukhta" that was commonly used for comfort in Iran and the Middle East. In the past, people would sit on the ground and rely on the mukhta for support. The integrated mattress of Shahrokh is designed with a nod to the mukhta, but elevated from the ground level to suit modern lifestyles.
The chair's design is characterized by its simplicity and attention-grabbing presence. The aim was to create an object that stands out in architectural spaces, with a form that is both understated and captivating. Shahrokh has been carefully crafted to harmonize with various architectural functions, making it a versatile addition to any space.
Shahrokh consists of two main parts: a single mattress connected to the foot and back parts, and a metal structure. To enhance comfort, holes have been strategically placed in the back and under the leather mattress. These holes allow air to escape from between the fibers inside the mattress, creating a softer seating experience. After the user gets up, the mattress breathes and returns to its original state.
The metal structure of Shahrokh is made of bent pipes with a diameter of 1.5 cm, divided into two pieces. The first part holds the mattress, while the second part serves as the base of the chair. These two parts are connected by fine tubes measuring 0.8 cm in diameter, ensuring stability and durability.
One of the challenges in designing Shahrokh was creating a delicate metal structure that could withstand regular use. This was overcome by reinforcing the structure with middle pipes, providing the necessary strength. Another challenge was ensuring proper ventilation for the leather mattress to prevent tearing or wear when sitting and standing up. This was achieved by incorporating several holes under and behind the mattress.
Shahrokh's voluminous mattress offers enhanced comfort for the user, while its delicate structure creates a sense of suspense and intrigue. The contrast between the volume of the mattress and the delicacy of the metal structure adds to the chair's visual appeal.
Designed in 2019 in Tehran, Iran, Shahrokh is a testament to the fusion of tradition and modernity. Its elegant and charismatic design, combined with its comfort and simplicity, make it a standout piece in any space.
Shahrokh was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2023. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the design, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, Shahrokh exemplifies excellence in the field of furniture design.
